Inner Healing

Most of us as adults pick up wounds to the soul as we journey through life. We may be wounded by words spoken to us, by incidents that have occurred during our life causing us to be fearful or withdraw or just vow never to do again, by people inflicting pain or hurt upon us, or by accidents. Because we live in a fallen, sinful world, it is almost inevitable that somewhere in our life, we will receive wounds from others. However, many wounds go back to childhood, and we may not even remember the incident, but we have sensory or body memories, and when we are in a certain situation, we automatically react in a certain way.

When we read it and allow it to sink deep within our Spirits we are shinning his light and life into our hearts and when the light comes in, the darkness leaves

There are times we may have been frozen in fear due to something that happened to us long ago. Some people even dream about their fears or things that have happened to them long ago.Wounds do not go away on their own, or even heal on there own! The saying, ‘time heals’ isn’t actually true unless there has been healing first. What we tend to do is bury our hurts and wounds and ‘forget’ them; however, whenever a situation occurs that touches on that wound, our old pattern of thinking and behaviour occurs and we respond from hurt and fear rather than respond to the situation as it is now. Trauma is also a wound, any sort of trauma, and so is abuse, any sort of abuse. These wounds go very, very deep and are harder to reach, but not harder to heal, once given over to God. Our old patterns or ‘templates’ of behaviour can change, once we have brought our hurts to the Lord and allowed Him to heal us.We do not need to ‘dig’ or look for wounds, because they will show themselves naturally or the Holy Spirit will bring them to the surface, in order to show us what is there, and that He wants to heal them. However, we do need to deal with wounds that surface or have been revealed, because at the least, they affect our behaviour now, and at the worst, they fester and become infected with the fuel of hate, anger, bitterness and unforgiveness.

Inner healing can be a process

Jesus stood up in the Temple and read from the scroll, saying:”The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners….

I saw myself holding Jesus’ hand and going down into a cave

.” (Isaiah 61:1). Isaiah was speaking of Jesus. Jesus knew his purpose… to break the power of sin and death and sickness and to bind up the broken hearted and set prisoners free. We are prisoners when we are captive to old wounds. He wants to set us free. The good news is that Jesus is the healer! He not only heals our bodies, but he heals the whole person, he heals our emotional wounds and scars. Think of the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’ (Luke 10:25-37) in this story we see how a man was beaten up by robbers and left for dead on the road side. After others pass him by, a Samaritan man comes along, pours oil into his wounds, bandages him up, takes him to an inn, and pays the inner-keeper to feed him and look after him; he even returns to see how he is and to pay more if needed. When Jesus told this story, he was not just referring to how we should love our neighbours and look after them; but he was speaking of himself as the healer. He is the one who comes alongside us and pours oil into our emotional wounds, bandages us up, picks us up and takes us to a place of safety where we can recover. This is a picture of His healing love. Be assured, He wants to heal, it is in His nature to heal, it is part of who He is; AND there is NO WOUND SO DEEP THAT HE CANNOT HEAL IT! If we want to be healed, and we let him in, then He will heal us.The healing ProcessIf you know that you are hurting, that there is a need, a wound in you that needs healing, then we can trust Him with our pain and He will not hurt us, or betray us, or humiliate us, but rather welcome us into his love and into his presence. So to be healed firstly we need to acknowledge that we have an area within us that needs healing. Sometimes we might need to ask Him to reveal the root, where it came from, if we do not know, and He will; what he reveals, He heals, and those things already revealed will also be healed, when we acknowledge them and then allow Him to come and heal. In John 8:32 it says, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” and in John 8:36 it says, “whom the son sets free is free indeed!” He not only reveals the truth about who He is, that sets us free, but the truth about ourselves and our own spiritual and emotional state, which sets us free. And We can trust Him completely, and be vulnerable in his presence. His desire is to make us whole.Once it is revealed that we have a wound, and we have acknowledged we have an area that needs healing, all we need to do is come to Jesus and ‘pour out’ our hurt, our feelings, our fears, our thoughts to him….. speak it all out to him, from our hearts, using our own words, as if we were talking to a friend. One of the most important stages of the healing process is forgiveness. Forgiving those who have hurt you, or those involved in the incident, or even forgiving God for allowing it to happen to you, is crucial in your healing process, whether they deserve it or not. None of us are ‘deserving’ but we all forgiving and releasing. In releasing others, we release ourselves.Forgiveness releases you from all the bitterness, hate, anger, revenge etc and also releases the other person from your judgment. When we judge others we bring judgment on ourselves, so we need to release people from our judgment.I am not saying that in forgiving you will forget everything or that you should place yourself in that situation again – you will not forget, but you will not hurt like you did before – the wound will heal and you will be able to look back without feeling hurt or shame or anger, because in forgiving, you release, you let go of everything. In releasing everything, you release yourself, and you release the Lord to come in and heal you. Let him deal with the person who hurt you in His way. He knows what He is doing and He will bring justice and righteousness and peace into the situation; if not now, then in eternity when everyone is brought before his throne for judgment.Once you have spoken out your forgiveness and release to the Lord, and to the person (who doesn’t have to be present), then He is able to heal you. Ask Him then to pour into your wound the oil of healing and He will. Start to let His love and His presence fill you. Let Him ‘take you back’ to the time the situation happened and imagine Him, or bring Him into that situation. See Him protecting you, holding you, loving you, and comforting you in the painful situation. You may feel a sense of peace and stillness, joy, love, or a sense of release; you may hear his voice speak words of healing to your heart; you may ‘see’ a picture in your mind of the work of healing He is doing in you…. Let me give you an example…I was in a situation as a child/young teenager for a while, where someone in my family at the time was frightening, controlling, manipulative and made sexual advances to me as a young teenager. It left me with a fear of men, of men in authority. So I prayed and bought this to Jesus, I poured it out to him and I forgave him. He gave me vision which was healing .. I saw myself holding Jesus’ hand and going down into a cave…. The cave was dark and frightening, but he told me to go ahead, to go down. I couldn’t see Jesus, but I could hear Him. He told me to let his voice guide me, although I couldn’t see him, so I did. I walked down into the cave. And when I got there I could see bright jewels all over the cave. I picked some of them up.I picked up a red jewel, a green one and a white one. The red one represented his blood, the green one, peace and the white one, purity. He gave me his blood to wash me, his peace in the situation and his purity. I was pure, not dirty, not guilty, and not harmed. This was healing… this is what can happen to you, when you allow him into your pain, wounds, darkness (cave). He goes with you and brings something good out of something bad. He releases his healing power, when we walk with Him and allow him in to do his work. But everyone’s healing will be different; and your healing is unique and special, and just right for you.Keeping your healingOnce you have received healing, don’t be tempted by those old feelings of guilt or anger etc; don’t be tempted to go back into the pain and anger, but remember to give them to the Lord and remember what He has done and is still doing in you. Remember to keep releasing forgiveness and speaking forgiveness, and speaking God’s peace into your own heart and into the situation. Inner healing can be a process… once one things is revealed and healed, you may be aware of another…. You can repeat this process over again in and with EVERY hurtful or painful situation you have had to face. He is willing to heal them ALL. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever…. His love is always the same and He is the same healing Lord.Once you have received healing in any area of your life, you also need to read the Word and Speak the Word of God into your life and over your life, and let the Word renew your mind. Our old templates, patterns of behaviour and thought patterns need to be changed! Our minds need renewing, our thoughts, our emotions and our behaviour and reactions. These can be renewed by changing our thought patterns; by allowing the light of God, His Word to change our hearts. When we read it and allow it to sink deep within our Spirits we are shinning his light and life into our hearts and when the light comes in, the darkness leaves. Here are some healing scriptures that you might like to read and meditate on:Isaiah 61:1, Isaiah 42:6-7, Psalm 51:17, Psalm 91, Psalm 103:11-17,
Psalm 107:20, Psalm 139:1-18, 1 John 5:14May God bless you, draw you close to himself and heal you as you pour out your heart to him and allow His Holy Spirit to come in to heal you.
